Close your eyes take a few deep breaths and picture yourself in a luscious meadow on the top of a mountain or a crystal, white sandy beach with deep blue-green ocean waves. Clear your mind of any other thoughts. Inhale and exhale slowly for 30 seconds then relax. Open your eyes. Yes, you just did it! You meditated and it took less than 1 minute.
As we go through the stresses of the day, we are bombarded by noises coming from our environment such as the phone ringing, email notifications, children screaming, significant other talking, co-workers complaining and bosses demanding. Add to this traffic jams and crazy drivers that cut you off or exhibit road rage. All of this can take a toll on the body and increase our stress levels.
Stress can certainly wreak havoc in our bodies in the form of pain, irritable bowel syndrome, weight gain, lack of sleep, frequent colds and flu among other conditions. That’s why it is so important to take time out of the day to just relax, close your eyes for a few minutes and breathe. Sit on a chair with both feet on the floor, straighten your back. Place your hand on your chest as you inhale and say to yourself, “I am breathing in peace and joy” and as you exhale say, “I am breathing out stress and frustration”. Do this 1 minute and you will notice a relaxation of your whole body.
